About Us

JOHN MOXON, website doodler

I live in North Baddesley, Southampton on the south coast of England, you know, the small smudge off the north-west coast of Europe, check it out on your map of the world.

I arrived in November 1948, a post-war baby boomer at the local general hospital. I was an ugly child and as you can see from the photograph (above) things didn't get much better.

I worked for the Ordnance Survey (U.Ks. national mapping agency) for 30 years but in September 1996 they offered me a large amount of money to retire early. "THANKS, GOODBYE," I said.

With a lot of time on my hands I decided to attempt to restore my late uncle Lew's '59 Deluxe Beetle. I had fond memories of the car from the mid-sixties and my cousin said it had been laid up behind a barn on a West Sussex farm for the previous 6 years. After seeing the car for the first time in 15 years it was obvious that the car was sadly beyond economic repair.

A ready made solution presented itself from the Hampshire VW Owners Club of which I was already a member. A fellow member Bernie Garrett was selling his newly restored '59 Deluxe AND it had a Judson Supercharger. The disappointment of my uncle's old '59 was quickly forgotten and I drove "Max" around the UK until autumn 2007 when my old faithful was replaced by my beautiful 1958 Karmann Ghia Coupe.

From taking my leave of the Ordnance Survey, I filled my days taking part-time jobs until one day in 1999 they realised they really couldn't live without me so I went back to work for them for another 3 years manipulating digital mapping data.  When the project I was working on had it's budget cut in 2002 I decided to cut and run again.

I then worked for The Southampton City Council, four days a week, fiddling about with mapping databases and driving the streets to ensure they meet Government standards of cleanliness. As fits the traditional "job security" of "The Temp" in August 2006 I was informed of Staff cuts and rather than be redeployed to another department I decided to retire myself and draw my Civil Service pension a few years early.

Oh yeah, and there is a little thing called "The VW Judson Register", which I started in April 2000 to fill the information void on the Judson subject.

So now you find me dispensing "wisdom"(??) on our "Judson Register Forum" or "The Samba.com Forum." If you want a straight answer about Judson Superchargers, just email or post a question on one of those Forums I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.

I hope you find this website of use and that you can find time to join us.

John Moxon.

Thank You. No website would be complete without the all important thank yous and this website would not exist without the assistance of the following people; Richard Tricker, for his encouragement, support and information, Julian Hunt, for encouragement and pictures, and Chris Simmons for vital technical support and advice. Last and by no means least Jacqui, my wife, for love and suffering the privations of a "computer widow". To anyone else who contributed in any way, Thank You too. J.E.M. April 2000.

The Judson Information in Japan

SEIJI MII, webmaster of "The Judson Information in Japan".

Seiji joined us at "The VW Judson Register" in January 2005. Like me, Seiji had searched The Internet for information about his newly acquired Judson Supercharger but had found very little in his own language.

Luckily Seiji speaks good English so he was able to make use of "The VW Judson Register" website. The glaring omission of any information on The Judson Supercharger in his native tongue has led Seiji on the course of gradually translating the essence of "The VW Judson Register" into the Japanese language.

We are very pleased to be able to help Seiji in his task and hope his website will help many Judson fans in Japan.

John Moxon.

This is Seiji's story:

I was born in 1972 in Tokyo, Japan and still live there with my wife Akiko and our young son Yohji. 1972 is a very important year for the Japanese as it is the year Okinawa reverted from U.S.A. to Japan.

My grandfather owned a Beetle and this was my first childhood encounter. The Beetle was expensive and only for the rich in Japan, even though it is named "Volks Wagen". The memories in my childhood were the shape, the sound and the smell of a Volkswagen, something never forgotten.

One day, taking a different route home from my high school, I found a brand-new Beetle from Mexico. Yes, my high school was near the “FLAT 4” showroom in Tokyo. This second encounter stirred childhood memories, and since then, adoration has taken over.

My first bug was '76 1200LE (1600cc/sportmatic) in 1995. I owned it for 2 years but sold it because of personal circumstances. In the summer of 2001, I had found work after finishing college and decided to have a new Bug.

A 1955 Oval was newly imported from Australia. I had been used to a stock 1600cc/dp engine and simply converted the Oval to the same. It ran very well, over 60000km for three years, except one important problem; heat. In December 2004, I found a exhaust valve became deformed by heat so I made the decision to revert to the stock 36hp engine.

But after a 1600 engine a 36hp would not be powerful enough so I decided to add a Judson. It works very well and runs much cooler than 1600cc/dp. I think the Judson might be good solution for the hotter and more humid climate of Japan.

As soon as I started to research about Judson Superchargers, I found "The VW Judson Register."  Soon I realised there are not any Japanese resources on the web or printed instructions. Those who sell Judson Kits in Japan, don't have Japanese instructions or sell Marvel Oil. This is why I resolved to make a Judson resource in Japanese and wish to share more about Judson Superchargers in Japanese. John has happily accepted my idea for this new website.

I greatly appreciate John and other member's help. It was also a pleasant surprise, to launch my Japanese web site on the 5th anniversary of "The VW Judson Register".  I also have to say a big thank you to my wife Akiko.

Seiji Mii. 1st April 2005.
